Dear Friends and Supporters,
With deep gratitude and a full heart, I write to share that Aura Home Women Vets (AHWV) will be closing its doors in July 2025. This announcement carries the weight of both heartbreak and pride as we reflect on all that we have accomplished together in service to women Veterans.
Since our founding in 2014, and even earlier when this mission first took root in 2007, Aura Home has worked tirelessly to prevent homelessness among women Veterans. Because of your generous support, AHWV has served a total of 1,026 individuals, including women Veterans, their partners, children, adult dependents, and those identifying as transgender women. In just this past year 2024 AHWV directly assisted over 50 women Veterans and their dependents, meeting urgent needs with compassion and advocacy.
Our work was never just about shelter it was about dignity, empowerment, and ensuring women who served this country received the support they earned.
Much of that vision was embodied in the Felicia Reeves Home, a property that was to become a safe haven for up to twelve women Veterans. We devoted years of labor and love to its renovation: cleaning, repairing, installing a new roof, and preparing it to be a cornerstone of our programming. Volunteers poured their hearts into the project. It stood as a symbol of what our community could achieve for those too often left behind.
Tragically, the home was destroyed, and after evaluating all options, rebuilding was not possible due to the property's location in a federally designated flood zone. That loss was a devastating blow not only to our infrastructure but to our long-term vision.
At the same time, the changing nonprofit environment including tightening regulations and increased barriers for transitional housing and small Veteran serving organizations has made it increasingly difficult to sustain our operations. Our focus has always been homelessness prevention, and without a stable and secure foundation, continuing at the level our women Veterans deserve is no longer possible.
And yet your support has made a lasting difference.
You made it possible for women to stay in their homes, repair their cars to get to work, access life-saving medical care, and finally receive the VA benefits they earned. You helped them stabilize, recover, and regain control over their futures.
As we prepare to close, we are filled with gratitude for the trust you placed in us. You walked with us on this journey. You honored our women Veterans not just in word, but in deed.
Thank you for standing with us.
With deepest respect,
Prosim,
Alyce Knaflich
