Individual Unemployability if you can’t work (<-link)

"If you can’t work because of a disability related to your service in the military, you may qualify for Individual Unemployability. This means you may be able to get disability compensation or benefits at the same level as a Veteran who has a 100% disability rating. Keep reading to find out if you may be eligible.

Am I eligible for this benefit from VA?

You may be eligible for Individual Unemployability if you meet the requirements listed here.

This must be true:

You can’t hold down a steady job that supports you financially (known as substantially gainful employment) because of your service-connected disability. Odd jobs (marginal employment) don’t count.

And one of these must be true:

  • You have at least 1 service-connected disability rated at 60% or more disabling, or

  • You have 2 or more service-connected disabilities, with at least 1 rated at 40% or more disabling and a combined rating of 70% or more

In certain cases—for example, if you need to be in the hospital often—you may qualify at a lower disability rating...."   Go to the link above for more detailed information and access to the forms for applying.

Request your military service records (including DD214) (<-link)

" You can request a copy of your DD214 and other military service records from the National Archives. Learn more about how to make a request.

Types of information you can get

You can request your military service records to get information like this:

  • Your character of discharge (from your DD214 or other separation documents)

  • Your duty stations and assignments

  • Your medals and decorations (awards)

  • Your qualifications, licenses, and certificates

How to request your records from the National Archives

You can request records from the National Archives online, by mail, or by fax.

Note: If you’re submitting an application for VA benefits, we’ll request your DD214 for you when we receive your application. You don’t need to do this yourself through the National Archives."

"Option 1: Request your records online...

Option 2: Fill out the National archive's request form (to mail or fax)..."

Be vigilant of scammers targeting SMC benefits and Purple Heart recipients!  (<-link)

"...The increased financial compensation associated with SMC benefits and the visibility of Purple Heart recipients can attract scammers looking to exploit Veterans.  Federal Benefits for Veterans, Dependents and Survivors handbook (link)

Download the Federal Benefits for Veterans, Dependents and Survivors handbook online or pick up a printed copy at your local medical center, regional office or Vet Center for free.

The handbook will help Veterans, service members and their families understand the full scope of VA resources available to them to help them make the most of life after service. It provides details on eligibility requirements for each benefit, and because VA serves different generations of Veterans, it also outlines the qualification guidelines for distinct periods of service to clarify eligibility for Veterans with service spanning both peace and wartime periods.

The VA Federal Benefits Guide is available in both print and digital formats. Veterans and family members can access the booklet on VA’s website, providing instant and convenient access to the wealth of information it contains. A limited number of printed copies may be available at your local medical center, Vet Center or regional office. To find the nearest VA facility, go to www.va.gov/find-locations.
